I have spent many hours in this beautiful pristine area, wild and untouched, it has a way of grabbing at your very soul. The ambiance here is real Africa and the scenes are majestic.
We spent many hours on the pans, the river beds and in the blind just witnessing the wild as we should, quietly taking it all in. There is so much going on that we miss when we keep moving – which is just like life really, never in the present and too busy for something ahead of us that may or may not come.
Mhara has the big four, Buffalo , Elephant, Lion , Leopard, amongst other species of animals like Civets , Caracals, Hyena , Bushbuck , Impala and incredible birding, and, a real privilege to find anywhere.
However there is more!, the incredible river drives and walks, the massive concentration of baobabs, and the thick riverine areas, the amazing elephant trails that have existed for centuries and this overall incredible ambiance the exists here in the heat and the dust.
Tsetse flies take you back years in time, often looked on as pests, they are in fact very interesting and important contributors to the preservation of these areas and an indication of the presence of game, they are truly fascinating species. Like so many things in life that make us uncomfortable, we try and eradicate them, however these wild places exists largely due to the presence of the Tsetse, as they have prevented man and his normal livestock farming from being here, reducing the ever present conflict between man and the wild.
At this time of year there is a large presence of Elephant and Buffalo and sitting quietly watching all the interactions is amazing, the smell of dung , mud and just the heat create a feeling of being intensely in the present.
Here are some images of the recent trip , more to follow
